Solid as a rock (Ella Fitzgerald) is a video art developed in Cornwall, uk that studies the relationship between natural and artificial in the search of percepts and affects in order to improve the knowledge of how a creative idea works. A voiceover accompanies the recording with some quotes from the painter Cezanne and the scientist Michio Kaku, as well as reflections based on the chapter “Percept, affect and concept” from “What is philosophy?” by the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. The nexus that connects the film is a trip by train to one of the atmospheric engine houses that are around Redruth, emphasising the importance of the region’s mining old life and also in how the meaning of a place changes over the years.
I really like vintage, but I do not think that technology conflicts with more traditional media. It is just about to find a way that it works for you. I can not imagine Warhol complaining because his polaroid is too modern. I like to record with my iPhone 6s because it is practical and at the same time it has limitations that I may consider rules in the creative process. I am restricted to the memory I have. So, contrary to what it may think, I can not record everything I want, I have to select fragments and edit the film on the computer. The quality I get does not allow me to show it on a large screen, which defines the visualization style. In the changes of format, the scenes lose quality, getting a pixelated texture that I do not wish to fight, which probably will be considered beautiful in terms of vintage cut after thirty years.
